The thought is that mashup is the key to future web maps and web technology (GIS, GPS) the tool that creates the key. Only with the help of the technology and science can we show details of location in today’s maps since 2000. Now, with the help of mashup we can even provide much more details about location and areas.

In the future, there will be unlimited opportunities in web map with the help of mashup. Furthermore, the web map will enable to presented information in new dimensions as emotion, fun and story will be involved more.

Almost 1900 years were needed to come up with maps that show details about location since the Ptolemaeus came up with the Ptolemaic system in the first century. Back then, Columbus used that map to discover the American continent. With the emergence of the web, the GIS, GPS technology, and the dispatching earth pictures of 1 m grade from IKONOS satellite, it is possible to provide information about location on the map that is much more accurate now.

It is amazing how the map became so important in our daily life in such a short time. Location-based service, mashup, telematics, and so on all these services weren’t possible without the map.

Internet experts predict the web map to be a big converged platform providing accurate information about locations and spaces. However, there are no concrete blueprints for the future yet.

DEC used to posses the best running search engine called AltaVista. However, the company did not watch the search market with all its potentials closely enough and became forgotten by the internet users. Columbus surprised the world by using the inaccurate Ptolemaic system when he discovered the American continent while he wanted to go to India. As these two examples show very well, the future can always be approached in many different ways.

At this point, the companies turn the hidden values of maps that are revealed in bits and pieces through the web technology into earnings models. Those kinds of earnings models will prove that the web map service is the platform of the future. This is because the map service can add a lot of value to empty spaces. When you look up Napoleon’s Battle of Waterloo in Google or Naver you will receive the answer in plain text only making it hard to quickly catch the gist. But if you bring those text contents into context with the locations and spaces the value of the information is much richer as you combine abstract and materialized information. That is a big aspect for the major search companies as they proceed to use the map as a new platform.

The simple map converged with the web, GIS and GPS makes creates a platform for advertisement, culture and history. How are advertisement, culture and history going to be presented in future web maps?

Fifth, convergence of map, mobile and SNS

SK introduced a new product that combines the map search advertisement seen on the front with mobile map and mashup. Currently, they are launching the product and therefore, we can’t provide any more details about it. However, the product seems to connect Messenger and maps that are familiar to us with mobile search and Cyworld map. The final idea is to link the map with Cyworld(like myspace in US) and thereby generate earnings.

Nate(one of messeger’s name)is working on a similar service called “ByeolByeol” map which is basically a location-based service. Same with, KTF and LG Telecom, companies that trying to develop different kinds of map services.

A location-based service (LBS) is an information and entertainment service, accessible with mobile devices through the mobile network and utilizing the ability to make use of the geographical position of the mobile device.

Mashup, a web application that combines data and/or functionality from more than one source

Google Maps did not disclose their sources in the beginning. However, a developer in the US hacked into Google Maps and used it to create the housing map that provides real estate related information on the map (www.housingmaps.com).

People paid a lot of attention to the new kinds of information and services that this service provided. Google noticed that and turned it into a new business model. Google Maps disclosed their sources, provided new contents and opened the door for Mashup. By doing that, Google was able to dramatically increase their market share within a short period of time. More and more new contents using mashup are showing up. That is when “Where 2.0” started.

Mashup became so popular because it helps the users to easily find the information they are looking for. Regarding the map service, it is expected that mashup will provide not only information about the location itself but also more detailed information about the whole area. Hence, the expectations in this field are very high.

Domestic portals started to follow this trend and take more and more advantage of the public map business. In average 10 different mashups that use open API come up every day worldwide.

Second Map in mobile

The mobile device manufacturers and mobile mapping businesses sharing earnings by installing maps on the mobile device is one of the earnings model.

Nokia, for instance, put itself in the place of a PC user and contemplated what kinds of applications would be needed on the mobile device in the future. That’s when they came up with the idea mobile map services.

On the left side, iPod touch is displayed. When Yahoo launched the exclusive map service for iPod touch on October 20^th, a lot of people were already prepared for this. The right side shows Nokia’s most recent phone with the very new 3D map.

Mobile maps, called PNS (Personal Navigation System) are receiving more attention through as they are substituted for car navigation systems. Additionally, they provide more information than the user can get through car navigation systems such as information about public transportation and real-time traffic information.

A study that was published in July 2008 shows that during the last year the utilization ratio of mobile map service increased to 82% in the US and 49% in Europe. Of all mobile device users, only 7.5% used the mobile map service in the US, 3.4% in Europe. According to the numbers, the market may still be pretty insignificant. But taking the rapid growth of the last year into account, the speed is fear dreadful.

Google Maps, S/W development such as Navtec, terminal technology of the iPhone in the US and N70 in Europe had a huge impact on the rapid growth in the last years.

Also in Korea, all interest of mobile communication companies and major portals is towards mobile map service. Mobile communication companies want to extend the map service of their own company. The four big portals are developing mobile mapping applications with satellite, hybrid, and vector imageries. But it will still take some time until approaches will be made to place local advertisements on mobile maps.
